Nuclear weapons are also not counted directly, but countries that have them receive an indirect score bonus.

Size alone is not the reason. The US can move large forces across oceans, refuel aircraft in flight, run carrier strike groups and support bases around the world, all at the same time. It also has a carrier fleet larger than any other country's. Very few countries can combine all of these abilities, and that is what keeps the US at the top of the conventional military ranking.
